It is not uncommon for businesses to cut costs in order to stay competitive in an ever changing global economy. That may result in the elimination of jobs and facilities. There are federal requirements or laws regarding notification of the loss of jobs and closing of facilities, including the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. The WARN Act helps ensure advance notice in cases of qualified plant closings and mass layoffs. The U.S. Department of Labor has issued guides to provide workers and employers with an overview of their rights and responsibilities under the provisions of the WARN Act.
It is important to understand your rights and obligations under this law. A WARN notification results in a visit from the local Rapid Response team to provide assistance to you and your workers. The Rapid Response team will meet with the company contact person to explain policies and programs that are available to help you and your employees get through this difficult time.
The Rapid Response Team is generally made up of representatives from Iow@Work, Workforce Development (unemployment and job placement), your community college, Vocational Rehabilitation, Department of Human Services, and Economic Development. Other organizations may be involved if their services are needed. There is no charge for these services.
The Rapid Response team can help Employers with the following:
